The legislature has instituted a program for determining appropriate child-support payments. Information is entered into a computerized program that considers gross monthly earnings of both parents and well as expenses. The result is a dollar amount based upon a formula. This takes the guesswork and subjectivity out of the equation so that a fair amount is presented.
Spousal support/alimony can be temporary in nature - awarded until the divorce proceedings occur. The amount is determined and awarded in accordance with the same computerized formula used for child support. Post-trial support is granted by a judge after a divorce hearing and is considered semi permanent. However, unless the support agreement is non-modifiable, it can always be changed post judgment.
